WTA Finals: Who is the Next Tennis Queen?
After what has been an eventful year in the Women’s Tennis
Association (WTA) category, the curtains on the tennis season is about
to be drawn with the WTA Finals.
Featuring the top eight female tennis players in the world, the
battle for the 2017 WTA Finals trophy is currently underway in
Singapore.
Simona Halep (ROU), Garbiñe Muguruza (ESP), KarolÃna PlÃÅ¡ková (CZE),
Elina Svitolina (UKR), Venus Williams (USA), Caroline Wozniacki (DEN),
Jeļena Ostapenko (LAT) and Caroline Garcia (FRA) will all be fighting
for the final title to be won before the end of the 2017 season.
The Format
The singles event of the competition features eight players in a round-robin event {definition: an event where each participant plays every other participant once}. These players are then split into two groups of four.
Just like in football competitions, each player will face the other
three players in her group. The two players who can gather the most
points in both groups will advance to the semifinals.
The first-placed player in one group meets the second-placed player
in the other group, and vice versa. The winners of each semifinal meet
in the championship match.
The Groups
As mentioned earlier, the eight players are separated into two
groups: the Red Group and the White Group, both colors representing the
flag of Singapore.
The White Group has Garbiñe Muguruza, KarolÃna PlÃÅ¡ková, Venus
Williams and Jeļena Ostapenko. In the Red Group, we have Simona Halep,
Caroline Wozniacki, Caroline Garcia and Elina Svitolina.
The Tournament so Far
In the White Group, Karolina PlÃÅ¡ková has already qualified for the semifinals. The player ranked world No. 3 made a name for herself after defeating Venus Willams (5th) and also Wimbledon champion, Garbine Muguruza (2nd) on her way to qualifying out of the group.
Pliskova will play against Ostapenko in her last game in the White group.
After losing both games, will Ostapenko finally get herself a win over already-qualified PlÃÅ¡ková?
