Real Madrid were shocked on Sunday when they were defeated by a newly promoted side for the first time in 10 years.
Real last lost a match to a team who only just reached LaLiga all the way back in the 2007-08 season, when Almeria hosted Los Blancos and secured a 2-0 win courtesy of a strike from Juanito and an Alvaro Negredo penalty.
They went nine full seasons without suffering the same fate, before travelling to Girona in their 10th campaign since that defeat to Almeria on Sunday afternoon.
It was Real’s first ever match against Girona, and the Catalan club fought back from a goal down to claim a historic 2-1 victory. Isco had handed the visitors the lead inside the first 15 minutes, but Christian Stuani levelled the scores 10 minutes after the break before Portu netted the winner four minutes later.
This is just the third time a newly promoted team has beaten the reigning champions of Spain’s top division since Almeria overcame Real a decade ago.
Real Madrid won LaLiga in 2006-07, and were beaten by Almeria (2-0 away) in 2007-08
Barcelona won LaLiga in 2009-10, and were beaten by Hercules (2-0 away) in 2010-11
Barcelona won LaLiga in 2015-16, and were beaten by Deportivo Alaves (2-1 away) in 2016-17
Real Madrid won LaLiga in 2016-17, and were beaten by Girona (2-1 away) in 2017-18

While England’s top flight has come to terms with the fact it is no longer the ‘best’ league in terms of quality of football or the strength of the biggest teams, it still sells itself on being the most entertaining division in world football. This hardly shines brightly on LaLiga as a competitive division, especially when compared with the Premier League.
While this is hard to quantify, the fact is that newly promoted teams have a better record against reigning champions in the Premier League than in LaLiga.
Manchester United won the Premier League in 2008-09, and were beaten by Burnley (1-0 away) in 2009-10
Manchester City won the Premier League in 2011-12, and were beaten by Southampton (3-1 away) in 2012-13
Manchester City won the Premier League in 2013-14, and were beaten by Burnley (1-0 away) in 2014-15
Chelsea won the Premier League in 2014-15, and were beaten by Bournemouth (1-0 away) in 2015-16
Leicester City won the Premier League in 2015-16, and were beaten by Hull City (2-1 away) and Burnley (1-0 away) in 2016-17

Such a record suggests there is more unpredictability in the English game than the Spanish, and unpredictability can equate to entertainment – certainly in the world of football.
